PepsiCo: acquisition of all Sabra and Obela brands

(CercleFinance.com) - PepsiCo announced on Friday that it had reached an agreement to buy the 50% it did not already own in the spreadable appetizer brands Sabra and Obela, for an undisclosed sum.

The American food group recalls that it joined forces with Israeli Strauss in 2008 to create the 50/50 joint venture Sabra, followed by the 50/50 joint venture Obela in 2012.

Based in New York, Sabra manufactures and distributes fresh products, mainly hummus-based, in the USA and Canada, with sales of some $400 million a year in the US market alone.

In the same segment, Geneva-based Obela operates in Australia, New Zealand and Mexico.

PepsiCo - which points out that it has been interested in the fresh spreadable products category for some fifteen years now - backs up the transaction with its desire to focus on products that are simple and easy to consume, but also offer nutritional qualities.

The transaction is expected to be finalized by the end of the year.
