Ericsson: 5G, a major development focus by 2030
(CercleFinance.com) - Ericsson unveils its 'Mobility Report', which estimates that 5G Standalone (SA) and 5G Advanced will be priorities for communications service providers (CSPs) by 2030.
The Ericsson Mobility Report forecasts a threefold increase in global mobile traffic by 2030. Currently, less than 20% of CSPs are deploying 5G SA, but it is expected to account for almost 60% of the 6.3 billion 5G subscriptions expected by that date.
In India, average monthly consumption per smartphone, currently the highest in the world (32 GB), is expected to reach 66 GB by 2030.
Overall, 5G will carry 80% of total mobile traffic in 2030, compared with 34% in 2024. FWA (Fixed Wireless Access), the second 5G use case, is offered by over 80% of CSPs in four out of six regions, and is expected to account for 80% of the 350 million FWA connections by 2030.
The report also anticipates a decline in 4G subscriptions in India, from 640 million in 2024 to 240 million in 2030. The first 6G deployments are expected in 2030, building on the capabilities of 5G SA and Advanced.
