Telefonica: quantum computing project in Germany

(CercleFinance.com) - O2 Telefonica, Telefonica's German subsidiary, announced on Thursday that it plans to integrate quantum computing technologies into its mobile network to improve performance and better protect data.

As part of this pilot project, the operator plans to team up with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon's cloud division, and the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) to examine the possible uses of these algorithms.

Quantum technologies provide new ways of solving complex computing problems that are difficult for conventional systems to solve", he explains in a press release.

O2 Telefonica says it plans to use the Amazon Braket quantum computing service designed by AWS to determine the optimal positioning of its telecommunications towers in Munich.

In addition to optimizing network coverage and reducing interference, the operator intends to use quantum cryptography to ensure the resilience of its operations.

O2 says it is particularly interested in functionalities linked to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum key distribution (QKD) systems, two standards it considers to be 'robust' solutions for data protection.

From his point of view, quantum computing will also pave the way for the advanced security parameters he believes will characterize the next generation of 6G mobile telephony.
