Nokia: cellular network for a mission to the Moon

(CercleFinance.com) - After months of testing and validation with Nokia Bell Labs, Nokia and Intuitive Machines announce the successful final integration of Nokia's Lunar Surface Communications System (LSCS) into the IM-2 mission lunar lander, called Athena.

Athena and the LSCS will travel to the lunar South Pole region on the forthcoming IM-2 mission, where the Finnish network equipment supplier and Intuitive Machines intend to deploy the first cellular network on the Moon.

This cellular network is designed to manage surface connectivity between the lunar lander and the vehicles, carrying high-definition video streaming, command and control communications and telemetry data.

Intuitive Machines plans to relay LSCS data back to Earth using its direct-to-Earth data transmission service. The earliest Athena launch is scheduled for late February from NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
