Repsol: 800 million released for circular methanol
(CercleFinance.com) - Repsol announced on Wednesday that it plans to invest more than 800 million euros in a site for the conversion of non-recyclable waste into methanol, to be set up near the port of Tarragona.
The Spanish energy group said that its Board of Directors today gave the go-ahead for the release of the funds for this project, which is supported by the European Commission as part of its innovation fund.
The site, dubbed 'Ecoplanta', aims to convert 400.000 tonnes of municipal solid waste from sorting centers into 240,000 tonnes of circular chemicals and advanced biofuels, including methanol, via a gasification process.
Scheduled to come on stream in 2029, the plant is expected to create some 340 direct and indirect jobs.
In a press release, Repsol points out that it has set itself the target of achieving a capacity of between 1.5 and 1.7 million tonnes of renewable products by 2027, rising to 2.7 million by 2030.
