Rio Tinto: to build a desalination plant in Dampier
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto reports that while the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme (WPWSS) supplies several towns and industrial sites in Western Australia, reduced rainfall and streamflow in recent years has reduced aquifer recharge.
Against this backdrop, and in order to limit the impact on groundwater resources, Rio Tinto will build a desalination plant at Dampier, which will supply 4 giga-litres of water per year from 2026.
A second phase, scheduled for 2027, could double this capacity.
The Water Corporation is also planning a new desalination plant by 2030 to secure supply and reduce extraction at Bungaroo.
