Alstom: modernizing signalling at South Kirkby
(CercleFinance.com) - The Group announces the installation of new, modern signalling equipment at South Kirkby, West Yorkshire, England.
The old manual system, installed on the East Coast main line over 50 years ago, was deemed obsolete and increasingly difficult to maintain.
It has been replaced by an intelligent system that operates signals and points more efficiently, improving journey punctuality for passengers.
The safety of Network Rail's crews is also enhanced, as the new system keeps a closer eye on trains occupying specific areas of the track.
The project has introduced a computerized interlocking system, Alstom's Smartlock400. Interlocking ensures train safety by preventing conflicting movements at junctions and level crossings.
