Rolls-Royce: recycling project for former RAF aircraft
(CercleFinance.com) - Rolls-Royce is taking part in the Tornado 2 Tempest initiative, a groundbreaking recycling project transforming components from former Royal Air Force Tornado aircraft into powdered metal for the 3D printing of new Orpheus engine parts.
This project, linked to the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, explores the use of this technique for the future Tempest platform.
Titanium-rich components, such as compressor blades, were recycled to produce a nose cone and compressor blades, which were successfully tested on an Orpheus engine.
This initiative, led by the UK Ministry of Defence in partnership with Rolls-Royce and Additive Manufacturing Solutions, aims to strengthen access to strategic metals for the UK defense industry.
