Nokia: tested elastic networks in Japan

(CercleFinance.com) - Nokia has successfully conducted a first proof-of-concept (PoC) with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) and Anritsu Corporation to demonstrate the effectiveness of elastic networks in reducing energy consumption in mobile networks.

The elastic network was developed within the framework of the Global Forum on Innovative Optical and Wireless Networks (IOWN). Once deployed, the elastic network reduces energy costs by transferring network resources from the secondary destination to a primary destination, enabling radio and optical equipment to be put to sleep at the same time.

In the event of sudden traffic peaks, network resources can be switched on demand', says the group.

This technology will enable operators like NTT to better meet future AI-generated bandwidth demands while reducing energy consumption.

James Watt, Vice President and General Manager of Nokia's Optical Networks Division, said: 'Reducing energy consumption across our product portfolio is a priority for Nokia in order to improve energy efficiency and significantly reduce our customers' carbon footprint. '
