STMicroelectronics: a new photonic technology

(CercleFinance.com) - On Thursday, STMicroelectronics unveiled a new 300mm silicon platform designed for optical interconnections in cloud data centers and AI clusters.


The chipmaker explains that this new product combines photonics-on-silicon (SiPho) technology with an optical integrated circuit known as 'BiCMOS'.

Both technologies, currently in the industrialization phase, will be manufactured at the company's 300 mm plant in Crolles (Isère), with production scheduled to ramp up in the second half of 2025.

Demand for AI is accelerating the adoption of high-speed communications technologies within the data center ecosystem," says the group in a press release.

"For ST, this is the right time to introduce a new energy-efficient silicon photonics technology and complement it with next-generation BiCMOS technology," it adds.

According to LightCounting, the data center pluggable optics market, valued at seven billion dollars in 2024, is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 23% between now and 2030, to exceed 24 billion dollars by the end of that period.
