Engie: European Commission approves state aid

(CercleFinance.com) - On Friday, the European Commission announced that it had authorised Belgian state aid aimed at extending the life of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 nuclear reactors.

Brussels, which states that its decision follows an in-depth investigation, recalls that it was approached after the Belgian government decided to extend the life of the two nuclear reactors by ten years.

Both nuclear reactors, which are majority-owned and operated by Engie's subsidiary Electrabel, were due to close in 2025, in accordance with the 2003 law on nuclear phase-out.

However, the Belgian government reversed its decision in the wake of the 2022 energy crisis and the war in Ukraine, in order to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels and secure its energy supply.

Both reactors are due to restart by 1 November 2025, following the work required to extend their lifespan.
