Ericsson: Telia tests the transition from 2G to 5G for railways

(CercleFinance.com) - Ericsson has announced that Telia Company, the Swedish telecommunications operator, is to test the transition from GSM-R (2G) to FRMCS (5G) rail communications on a 40 km line in Sweden, in partnership with Ericsson and Trafikverket.


This new standard is designed to digitize rail operations and facilitate automation without the need for a dedicated cellular network.

The current system will be phased out by 2033, while FRMCS should be fully operational by 2027. This project is part of the modernization of critical infrastructures and the transition to more sustainable transport.
